ÓPERA FLAMENCA

100 years ago now, flamenco went through a brief but highly productive period known as “Ópera Flamenca”. Cantaors and cantaoras like Manolo Caracol, La Niña de los Peines and Pepe Marchena had great success dressing flamenco up as copla, soleà, fandango, guajira and seguiriya. The artists mixed up these sounds as their own creative instinct moved them. The trio Ópera Flamenca draws on the spirit of those times to recreate them in an updated format. The singing links together petenera, Colombianas, copla and seguiriya. The result is an amalgam in which every piece has its own diverse emotional register charged with nostalgia for old-style flamenco and, at the same time, uninhibited creative strength of the Ópera Flamenca era.
